'Rested' is easily one of the more 'simpler' illustrations I've made. That being said, it was still a fun piece since the illustration was essentially capturing a character's essence -- one my biggest passions.

This was a direct tribute to Jigglypuff as a character in the Super Smash Bros series. In the background, you can see her performing several moves that you would see her do within the game (From top down: Forward Air, Sing, Pound, Jump, Down Air, Neutral Air, Rest). I wanted to stay as true to her proportions and the silhouettes you would find of her in-game. I wanted to lead the viewer's eyes to go from each move, oscillating while coming back to the focal jigglypuff to fully soak in her character. That being said, the focus was definitely on showing Jigglypuff off, so I muted the background jigglypuffs and went for a very simple background, with minimal effects.

I am pretty happy with this piece. The hardest aspect of it may have been staying accurate to what she looks in the game. This required a lot of references and my own familiarity with what she should look like. After everything was drafted though, finishing up was very straight-forward. Overall this was a fun and simple piece, I do hope to illustrate this character again someday!

P.S: can you spot the "rested" gem in this piece?

Special thoughts:

  • Don't overwork the coloring
  • Keep the background simple
  • Feel free to look up gameplay of her!
